How to Set Up the Y-Drill

You will need four cones and a flat surface to perform the Y-Drill.

  1. Place the first cone (Cone A) on the ground, your starting point.
  2. Place the second cone (Cone B) about 5 yards ahead of Cone A.
  3. From Cone B, place the third cone (Cone C) 5 yards to the left and the fourth cone (Cone D) 5 yards to the right, forming a Y-shape.

The setup should now resemble the letter Y, with Cone A at the base, Cone B at the intersection, and Cones C and D at the top corners of the Y.

Performing the Y-Drill

  1. Begin in a ready position at Cone A (either in an Athletic Stance or with one foot leading).
  2. Explode out of the starting position and sprint directly to Cone B. Focus on driving your knees up and pumping your arms to gain speed.
  3. Sprint around Cone B towards Cone C. Round Cone C with short, choppy steps.
  4. Sprint back to Cone B, moving around the outside of the cone, and sprint to Cone D.
  5. Round cone D with short, choppy steps and sprint back to Cone B.
  6. Sprint around Cone B and back through Cone A to finish the drill.
